About therapy

A labyrinth

Psychodynamic therapy is based on the principle that we are shaped and influenced by our early life history but that these patterns can be changed. Therapy enables us to look at and be curious about these blueprints, many of which operate on an unconscious level. Often the strategies that kept us safe as a child can outlive their usefulness and become barriers to how we want to be in the world. The therapeutic relationship is the means by which our history and ways of being with others can be explored and transformed. Working with dreams and fantasies can also be a powerful way to understand what is going on beneath the surface and to bring these aspects of ourselves into awareness.

Therapy is a unique and powerful undertaking that can change how you see yourself and make a lasting difference to your relationships and ways of being in the world. It can also be a playful and creative way to recover aspects of yourself that have been neglected, hidden or disallowed.

Research shows that the strength of the therapeutic relationship is the key predictor of change in therapy, so it is important that we feel we can work together. Therapy can sometimes be challenging and uncomfortable, but being open about and discussing these difficulties is an important part of the change process and can benefit relationships in all parts of your life.
